Beyond either/or

We live in a world that loves certainty.
Pick a side. Take a stand. Make it clear.

But most of the meaningful work I see — especially in facilitation and engagement — lives in the in-between.

In the gray areas.
In the tension between urgency and nuance.
In the questions we’re still learning how to ask.

Either/or thinking is tempting. It’s fast. It’s satisfying. It makes us feel like we’ve done something. But so often, it’s also a shortcut. And one that leaves whole stories (and communities) out of the frame.

What if instead of asking people to pick, we asked them to pause?

A better way to show up

In my reflections on how we design for engagement — not just around what we ask, but how we invite — I was reminded of something I heard at a facilitation conference a few years ago:

The way people participate is shaped long before they enter the room.

And often, what shapes them most isn’t apathy or disinterest: It’s the assumption that there are only two sides. That you have to be an expert or stay silent. That nuance will only slow things down.

This is the cost of either/or thinking. It narrows the conversation before it even begins.

If we want deeper input, more representative voices, and decisions that reflect lived experience, we need to create space for complexity.

To reimagine what showing up looks like.
To tell a different story about who belongs in the room.
And to redesign what happens inside that room.

Because when we make space for nuance, we make space for more people to show up as their full selves.

And that changes everything.

Conversations in progress

Some conversations aren’t meant to be resolved. They’re meant to be returned to: gently, curiously, and often.

Conversations in Progress is where I write about the in-between:

The pause before the opinion.
The moment after something tender is shared.
The quiet wisdom that surfaces when we stop trying to fix and start trying to listen.

In memory of Andrea Gibson

Some people write poems. Andrea Gibson lived them, with a kind of fierce tenderness that cracked me open in all the right ways. Earlier this month, they passed away at 49. Their work shaped conversations about gender, justice, grief, and joy — inviting us to feel more deeply, love more bravely, and stay present to this beautiful, brutal world.

What awes me most about Andrea’s legacy, is how they made room for both the everyday and the extraordinary. Whether writing about queer identity, cancer, or vulnerability, their words remind us to slow down, lean in, and honor the full complexity of being human.

Some questions they’ve left me with:

• How do we hold space for grief and gratitude, especially during difficult seasons?

• What does it look like to show up with ‘velvet truce’ (as Andrea called it): offering softness even in the face of heartbreak?

Andrea taught us how to breathe through the ache, laugh into the void, and build belonging from our broken places. I’m deeply grateful for their light, and how it continues to guide us.

We’re closing out 2025 with two gatherings that lean into reflection, honest, and the power of showing up mid-process.

In August, we’re exploring Learning Out Loud: Being Human While Still Figuring It Out. This one’s for anyone navigating the messiness of becoming — which, let’s face it, is most of us. It’s not about having it all sorted, it’s about naming the not-knowing and making space to be real in the messy middle.

In November, we’ll gather around the question What Keeps You Going? A softer landing as the year winds down. We’ll dig into the rituals, values, and surprising anchors that help keep us steady through seasons of stretch.

Conversation starters

I’m writing this newsletter from my parents’ house — a place I haven’t lived in for over 25 years, but one that still feels like home the moment I walk through the door.

My kids, ever the truth-tellers, remind me: "Mom, this isn’t actually your home anymore".

Technically? They’re right. But emotionally, physiologically, relationally? This place still holds the blueprint of belonging.

It got me thinking about the difference between being home and feeling at home. And how those two things don’t always overlap.

We can be in the place where we sleep, pay bills, and pick up groceries — and still feel untethered.

And we can feel completely at home in places that aren’t ours in any formal way — a friend’s kitchen, a music venue, a walking trail, a particular folding chair in a community hall.

Some questions to sit with this month:

• Where do you feel most at home, and what makes it so?

• Are there places you’ve left that still feel like they hold part of you?

• What are the textures, sounds, or rituals that signal “home” to your nervous system?

• And how do we extend that sense of home to others — not just in our spaces, but in our presence?

There’s no right answer here. Just breadcrumbs. Leading us back to what feels grounding, honest, and real.

A final thought

Home isn’t always a place. Sometimes it’s a moment of being fully seen. Sometimes it’s the exact right words, spoken at the exact right time. Sometimes it’s a question asked with love. Sometimes it’s a room that lets you be.

That’s what good facilitation can do: shape spaces where we feel at home and like ourselves. And when we do that, we create the conditions where people will stay in the room long enough to learn something new.

Something tender.
Something that complicates what we thought we knew.
