What happens before things feel clear

I have been noticing how quickly we move from finishing one thing to starting the next. A project wraps. The email gets sent. The to-do is crossed off the list. And then we’re already onto whatever comes next.

There isn’t really a moment where we stop and take in what just happened, or if there is, it’s easy to skip. Easy to dismiss and tell ourselves that we’ll come back to it later.

A lot of my work is about helping groups make sense of messy, complex situations. And the first step is almost always the same: we slow things down and try to understand what just happened, before deciding what to do next.

The pause.

There’s this moment that shows up right before things start to shift. And it doesn’t feel clear, energizing, or even particularly productive. Instead, it feels unfinished. Maybe a bit scattered.

I’m starting to wonder if that moment, right before we move on, is actually where things start to make sense.

Retreats that move work forward

Over the past few months, we’ve been sharing pieces from our blog series Retreats that move work forward. And since we’re knee deep in strategy planning season, it felt like the right time to share the next piece in the series: Strategic Planning Retreats.

What I’ve been noticing, both in this work and in the reflection shared above, is how rare it is to create real space to pause.

Strategy is often treated as something that needs to be produced. A document. A set of decisions. Something to finalize and move on from.

But in practice, the most meaningful strategy work tends to start with slowing things down long enough to understand what’s actually happening— inside the work, within your team, and in the broader context in which you’re operating.

That’s what strategic planning retreats are designed to create: a space where people can step out of the day-to-day pace, reflect on what’s been unfolding, make sense of the complexity they are navigating, and begin to shape direction together in a way that feels grounded and usable. 

This is especially true for teams navigating growth, transition, or competing priorities; where it’s easy to keep moving without ever quite aligning. 

The pause, in this context, isn’t about slowing things down for the sake of it.

It’s what allows clearer decisions to emerge.

Conversations in progress

These musings sit in the middle. A little about the work, and a little about life itself. Conversations in Progress are a deeper exploration of the middle. The part before ideas are fully formed, questions are still open and understanding is still taking shape.

A reflection from earlier in the year prompts us to look back before leaping forward.

To pause long enough to notice patterns. To answer: What is this season of life asking of us?

As they say, hindsight is 20/20. It’s easier to see the turning points from the rearview.

Conversation starters

If you’re in a moment that feels unfinished, in-between, or just a little unclear, here are a few questions you might sit with — on your own, with your team, or around the dinner table:'

• What just happened here? What feels worth noticing before we move on?

• Where might we be rushing to action without fully understanding what’s unfolding?

• What patterns are starting to emerge, even if they’re not fully clear yet?

• What does a “pause” look like in our work right now? In our home?

• What would it mean to create just a little more space before deciding what comes next?

And when you’re ready to move forward:

• What feels like the next right step — not the fastest one?

• What are we carrying with us from this moment that might shape what comes next?

• What kind of pace would support us, rather than push us?

Sometimes the pause isn’t separate from the work. It is the work.

A parting thought

There’s an understated brand of courage in not rushing past the in-between.

In letting things be unfinished for a moment. In trusting that clarity can take shape if we give it a little space.

Wherever you find yourself right now (in motion, in pause, or somewhere in between) I hope there’s room to notice what’s unfolding, and to move forward in a way that feels grounded and true.
