What a year it’s been

As 2024 comes to a close, I’m settling into one of my favourite rituals: reflection. This time of year always inspires me to pause and look back—at the conversations we’ve had, the projects we’ve supported at Tilia, and the lessons learned along the way.

It’s been a year filled with facilitating complex conversations, collaborating on strategic plans with inspiring organizations, sparking belonging in communities, and learning on the fly (often while standing at the front of a room).

This year has reminded me of the importance of slowing down, asking the tough but necessary questions, and leaning into the power of collective imagination.

As I plan for 2025, I’m using the same process we guide our clients through—reflecting on what’s happened, considering my current context, and getting clear on what to leave behind and what to carry forward. It’s a practice that feels both grounding and energizing, and it has me excited for what’s ahead.

Here are some highlights from our year at Tilia—moments that reflect the heart of our work: facilitating meaningful conversations, supporting bold ideas, and helping communities and organizations create real, lasting impact.

Building community and belonging

This year, we’ve been deeply immersed in the work of creating spaces where belonging can flourish. Through We Belong in Jasper Place, we gathered with our community—both online and in-person—to listen, share, and dream together. The ideas and feedback from these conversations inspired a micro-grant program, giving community members support to bring their visions to life.

The projects that emerged in the first round of Projects for Belonging grants have been inspiring (seriously, check out the Jasper Place Arts Festival that emerged in part from this grant process for one example), and we’re looking forward to supporting an expanded round of funding in the new year. It’s a joy to witness what’s possible when we come together to build more connected, inclusive communities.

Strategic planning for change

This year, we had the privilege of partnering with a number of organizations dedicated to building a future where everyone can thrive and live free from violence. Using our engaging, participatory approach to strategic planning, we helped these clients create actionable plans that drive meaningful, systemic change.

These sessions were a great reminder of the power of analog tools—sticky notes, flip charts, and other tactile supplies. They help us slow down, spark creativity, and make sure everyone can contribute in a way that works for them. 

Helping organizations navigate complexity

We also worked closely with clients to build their capacity to engage with complex,
“sticky” topics—both internally and externally. From creating tailored tools to developing processes for meaningful engagement, we supported organizations in facilitating tough but necessary conversations within their teams. 

It’s always rewarding to see how intentional processes can shift dynamics and open pathways for dialogue, growth and understanding.

Event hosting: Good Talk

Good Talk Collective has been a constant source of joy and inspiration this year. Together, we’ve explored themes of rest, celebration, change, and presence—conversations that felt deeply needed in our busy, ever-changing world. 

These gatherings aren’t just impactful for participants—they’re transformative for Shannon and me as well. The depth of connection and insight people share lifts us up and fuels our passion for this work. Curious to learn more? This Taproot article beautifully captures what Good Talk is all about.

Welcoming a new office manager!

My growth and learning

Reflection has been a significant part of this year’s journey. From exploring how grief and trauma show up in engagement processes to refining our techniques and testing assumptions, I’ve been thinking deeply about how we, as facilitators, show up in the spaces we create.

I’ve been particularly focused on understanding power dynamics in facilitation—how the questions we ask shape participation and whose voices are centered. It’s a reminder that accountability and self-awareness are vital in this work.

This year, I’ve been intentional about connecting and learning with others in the field. Serving on the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) Research Committee, engaging in an informal Community of Practice on intersectionality and public engagement, and earning my facilitation certification have all provided rich opportunities to exchange ideas and grow. A standout moment was attending the International Association of Facilitators conference in San Diego, where I connected with facilitators from around the world, explored new approaches, and reflected on the assumptions that shape our work.

Looking forward

As I look back on the year, I’m amazed at all we’ve accomplished and the lessons we’ve gathered along the way. As 2025 approaches, I’m holding space for curiosity, creativity, and courage. For me, 2025 is about building spaces where belonging, connection, and imagination can truly thrive. 

It’s about fostering more opportunities for meaningful dialogue, deep reflection, and collective action–in our work at Tilia as well as in my local community and personal life. I’m also leaning into new creative collaborations and thinking about how we can best support our clients in making an even greater impact in the world.

We’ll be taking a collective exhale for the remainder of December at Tilia, napping, being present with our loved ones and soaking in the quiet moments that this season brings. Our office will be closed from December 23 to January 10 to pause, reflect, and recharge so that we can step into 2025 with fresh energy and intention.

I’m excited for what’s ahead and grateful to be in community with all of you. Thank you for being part of this journey—it’s a joy to do this work alongside you.
