The year we listened closely

Some years arrive quietly. Others feel like a long conversation — one that stretches across months, deepens with every project, and leaves you changed in ways you only notice when you finally pause long enough to look back.

This year felt like that for Tilia.

The pace picked up and slowed down in turns, and somewhere inside that rhythm, we kept finding ourselves in rooms where people were earnestly trying to make something better. A community. A system. A shared understanding. A way forward.

And all along the way, there were these small, grounding moments: someone naming the thing no one had language for yet; a team shifting from uncertainty to clarity; a workshop where the right question opened a door none of us had seen before.

Those moments linger, and they’re what I’m carrying forward: the reminder that belonging is built in small, intentional ways, that leadership can be gentle and effective, and that the future feels far more possible when we choose to build it together.

Looking back at 2025: The shape of our work

As this year winds down, I’ve been reflecting on the projects that shaped us — not as an exhaustive list, but as a handful of moments and milestones that illustrate the range of what Tilia was trusted to hold in 2025.

The content, sectors, and scopes were wildly different. But the through-line was steady: helping people make sense of complexity, navigate change, and stay connected to what matters.

This year, we were invited into work that stretched from the deeply strategic to the deeply relational — sometimes both at once. Here are a few of the highlights:

We supported a national organization in developing an internal engagement toolkit, then designed and delivered training that helped middle managers step into new ways of working with clarity and consistency. It was culture-building, connection-building, and capacity-building all at once.
We facilitated governance conversations with a number of not-for-profits, helping their boards articulate purpose, values, and shared agreements for how they want to move forward together. It was the kind of work that reminds me how much courage it takes to build something new — and how grounding a clear sense of “why” can be.
We facilitated LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® conversations that invited teams into a different way of working together; one that uses models, metaphor, and story to surface what words alone can’t always hold. Through building and reflection, people named what supports them, what strains them, and what they need in order to collaborate well — opening up new possibilities for how they show up together.
We evaluated a multi-year community development initiative focused on belonging, weaving together the lessons and stories that emerged over years of relationship-building. It was a reminder that community work rarely happens in straight lines — and that impact often shows up in the smallest, most human moments.
We reviewed engagement deliverables and mentored emerging practitioners, supporting a sector that is hungry for more ethical, thoughtful, relational approaches to public participation.
And, of course, we hosted Good Talk — our ongoing experiment in building connection, courage, and conversation. These gatherings continue to remind me that people are craving spaces where they can be honest, reflective, and human without needing to have it all figured out.

There were dozens of other moments, too — the quiet ones you rarely see in a yearly roundup. Helping advisory groups move through the messy middle. Coaching leaders through hard conversations. Shaping processes that honour lived experience. Creating rooms where people exhale a little deeper when they walk in.

When I step back and look at the shape of this year, it isn’t the variety of projects that stands out (though there was plenty of that). It’s the shared thread running through them all: people wanting spaces that feel more connected, more thoughtful, more grounded… and more human.

Good Talk Collective

Good Talk kept circling around similar questions this year — not because we planned it that way, but because people kept bringing their real lives into the room.

We spent time with the idea of capacity: the tension between what we want to offer and what we realistically have to give. We talked about the feeling of being stretched thin, or trying to honour limits that don’t always fit neatly into a calendar. We spent time together reflecting on how to nourish the relationships and routines that help us keep our footing. Sometimes the conversations drifted toward what felt heavy; other times, toward the small joys we forget to name until someone else mentions theirs.

The paths we explored collectively weren’t always clean or linear. They curved, doubled back, wandered. And instead of trying to tidy them up, we let them be what they were. That felt important — like a bit of permission, for all of us.

And in the end, we decided to take our own advice — and the advice of the people we sat beside all year. After so many conversations about capacity, limits, and the courage it takes to honour both, it became clear that we needed the same room to breathe we kept encouraging others to claim. So we pressed pause. Not forever, just long enough to realign and return with the kind of presence these gatherings deserve.

Conversation starters for a tender season

As we move into a season that asks for both reflection and rest, here are a few questions you might sit with — alone, with your team, or with the people you trust. None of them require tidy answers. They’re meant to make a bit of space. To help you notice what’s been true for you this year, and what you want to carry forward.

What did this year ask of you — and what did it give you in return? The exchange isn’t always equal. Naming it can bring clarity.
Where did you feel most like yourself? And what conditions made that possible?
What did you learn about your capacity — not in theory, but in practice? What stretched you? What steadied you? What surprised you?
What are you proud of that no one else saw? The quiet wins matter too.
What relationships, routines, or rituals helped you keep your footing? And which ones might need tending, softening, or letting go?
When did you feel at home in your work or your life? Think about not just a place, but a feeling. What does home feel like to you?
What’s beginning to emerge — in you or in your work — that might want room to grow next year? And what would support that growth? More time, more clarity, more boundaries, more help?
What’s one thing you want to stop carrying alone? And what’s one thing you’d like to carry with more intention?
What did this year teach you about rest? About limits? About showing up?
And maybe the most important one: Where can you offer yourself a bit more grace?

These questions aren’t a checklist — they’re an invitation. To pause. To breathe. To notice. To step into the next season with a little more clarity, and a lot of care.

A final thought

If this year taught me anything, it’s that the work we do (in our organizations, in our communities, in our families) is never just about the tasks. It’s about the people doing the tasks, and the conditions that help them show up with clarity, courage, and care.

It’s about the conversations that deepen us. The moments that steady us. The questions that move us forward when the answers aren’t quite ready yet.

As you close out your own year — in the swirl of deadlines, gatherings, transitions, or much-needed rest — I hope you can find a pocket of stillness to notice what this season is asking of you. I hope you feel supported by the people who matter, and connected to the things that bring you back to yourself.

Wherever you are, whatever you’re holding, may the end of 2025 be gentle, nourishing, and exactly what you need.

And may the beginning of 2026 arrive with enough brightness to pull you toward what comes next — even if the path is still unfolding.
